Volvo Penta Assisted Docking Wins DAME Design Awards 2021

Continuing to lead in technology that makes boating easier, safer, and more accessible than ever before. This commitment from Volvo Penta was recognized at the 2021 METSTRADE Show, where the Assisted Docking System received multiple DAME Design Awards.

On November 16, the DAME Design Awards announced its winners. Volvo Penta’s Assisted Docking System earned a joint win in the category of machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems, and fittings. In addition, the system received the overall DAME Award, the highest recognition at METSTRADE. This award highlights not only innovative design but also a strong commitment to continuous improvement across every stage of development.

Assisted Docking - An Industry First

This system is the marine industry’s first fully integrated Assisted Docking solution, designed to work seamlessly from helm to prop. As a result, Volvo Penta Assisted Docking delivers exceptional precision and control during maneuvering. It actively compensates for wind and current, allowing the captain to maintain control in challenging conditions. In addition, the system leverages the maneuverability of the Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System (IPS) in a completely new way.

Anders Thorin, Product Manager Electronics at Volvo Penta, highlights the significance of this innovation. He explains that receiving the overall DAME Award reflects the company’s commitment to advancing the boating experience. In particular, the goal is to make boating easier and more accessible for all skill levels. Docking is often the most intimidating part of operating a boat. However, Assisted Docking helps remove that stress, allowing boaters to navigate calmly and safely with greater confidence.

A Prestigious Award

The DAME Design Award, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, is one of the most respected honors in the marine leisure industry. It recognizes products that demonstrate excellence in design, performance, and innovation. Judges evaluate a wide range of criteria, including function, aesthetics, usability, and environmental impact. In addition, the jury considers how each product will influence the future of the marine industry.

Andre Hoek, speaking on behalf of the DAME jury, highlighted Volvo Penta’s long-standing focus on improving close quarters maneuvering. He noted that the Assisted Docking system reflects everything the award represents. In particular, the system combines extensive research, advanced software and hardware integration, and intuitive operation. As a result, it delivers a user experience that is both effective and easy to use.

The jury also emphasized the broader impact of the technology. By simplifying one of the most challenging aspects of boating, Assisted Docking helps make the experience more accessible. Ultimately, innovations like this play an important role in bringing new boaters into the industry.

This is combined with the other leading-edge technology provided with the Volvo Garmin Glass Cockpit, and Joystick Control System used in our Fractional Program fleet.

Volvo Penta Assisted Docking, the next generation of marine automation, allows the captain to defy the elements by removing the dynamics of wind and current while maneuvering in tight spaces, enabling safe and easy boat docking, even in challenging conditions.
