Cruising in Prince Edward County

Last month, I introduced Niagara on the Lake, a one stop gem of a destination. This month, however, it is time to take things a step further and explore a region built for cruising. With sandy beaches, scenic shorelines, wineries, and great restaurants, the Bay of Quinte offers something at every stop. As a result, it encourages you to slow down and explore. From Presqu’ile Bay to the eastern end of Adolphus Reach, you will find more than 80 kilometres of protected inland waterway to enjoy.

The Bay of Quinte is a cruising destination located just an hour and a half east of Toronto. With numerous marinas, islands, and canals with swing bridges, it offers both variety and challenge. In addition, it provides the perfect setting to build confidence and refine your navigation skills. You will likely start planning your next trip before heading home. To get started, you can follow a curated route from Captain Greg. However, it will not take long before you begin creating your own itinerary.

Ontario's Hidden Boating Gem

As you cruise east past Cobourg, along the edge of Presqu’ile Provincial Park in Brighton, the 69 foot Presqu’ile Point Lighthouse is impossible to miss. Built in 1840, it is the second oldest lighthouse on Lake Ontario. Remarkably, it has changed very little over the past century. The surrounding provincial park features an extensive network of trails and over three kilometres of sandy beach. As a result, it has become a popular destination for both boaters and visitors. Brighton also offers a rich history, with many century homes built during the prosperity of the Prohibition era.

Presqu’ile Bay marks the western entrance to the Bay of Quinte. From here, you can enter the eight kilometre Murray Canal, which connects directly into the system. As part of the Trent Severn Waterway, it operates from mid May to mid October, although hours can vary. The canal, constructed in 1889, includes two swing bridges, the Brighton Road Swing Bridge and the Carrying Place Swing Bridge. In addition, a small toll is required after passing through the Brighton Road Bridge, so it is best to have payment ready.

After passing through the Murray Canal, you arrive at the mouth of the Trent Severn Waterway. This 386 kilometre system offers endless cruising opportunities. If you choose to stop here, Trent Port Marina provides modern facilities and easy access to nearby shops and restaurants. In particular, it is worth visiting the Kawartha Dairy ice cream stand, a local favourite.

Continuing east, you will reach the town of Belleville. This is another excellent stop, with the downtown core located just a short walk from the marina and yacht club. In addition, the area offers a wide range of dining options. The Boathouse Seafood Restaurant is especially well known, with many locals claiming it serves some of the best fish and chips in the region.

Relax and Cruise on Lake Ontario

If you prefer a quieter and more relaxed experience, head just east of Belleville. Small islands and sheltered bays create ideal spots for overnight anchoring. While the marinas offer fewer amenities, the setting more than makes up for it. As a result, this area is perfect for unwinding on the water.

Continuing another 40 kilometres east brings you to Picton Bay at the “elbow” of Adolphus Reach and Long Reach. Surrounded by the town of Picton in Prince Edward County, this stop offers charming views, boutique shops, and great dining. In addition, Barley Days Brewery is a popular stop for local craft beer.

Along the south shore, Waupoos is home to Waupoos Estate Winery. Located just 1.6 kilometres from the marina, it is easily accessible by foot, taxi, or dinghy. If you have a captain onboard, a direct drop off can be arranged.

For a more refined experience, consider an overnight stay at the Farmhouse. As the sun sets over Prince Edward Bay, the atmosphere becomes truly memorable. Ultimately, it is the perfect way to end a relaxed day on the water.

I could keep writing about this fabulous destination because the options are endless, 80km of beauty. I look forward to hearing about your experiences and any tips you’d like to share. Like everything else in 2021, it will be a very unpredictable season and my advice is to plan well. If you’re planning an overnight or even a day trip to a specific destination, call ahead to the marinas and ask what their requirements for transient boaters are, also inquire about Covid restrictions in the area you are visiting. If you have any questions or need a little help in your planning, please reach out to us.
